Community Comes Together to Support Cancer Patient

Volunteer group's fund-raising efforts to help with medical expenses for YMCA employee a big success.

Helping neighbors in their time of need is the focus of 20 local women who recently formed the Cherokee Rose Civic Association.  

The clubs first event was held at on Oct. 15, an Upscale Yard Sale Benefit for cancer patient Jan Nance. By all accounts it was an overwelming success.

Hundreds turned out for the event, which raised over $5,100 for Jan Nance.  All monies raised will go to help with her ongoing medical expenses.

"We want to thank the community for supporting Jan," said Deb Harris, one of the organizers and a member of the Cherokee Rose Civic Association. Harris said their goal was to raise $1,000. "We were blown away by the community's support," said Harris. "We had so many wonderful donations."

Jan Nance, a water aerobics instructor at the Peachtree Corners YMCA since 2006, was recently diagnosed with uterine cancer and discovered that she had limited medical insurance.

The newly formed women's group, Cherokee Rose Civic Association, is a group of women from Peachtree Corners, Berkeley Lake, Norcross and Duluth who are committed to improving the community through voluntarism.
